The Kalinga War was fought in what is now India between the Maurya Empire under Ashoka and King Raja Anantha (some historians opined the king name was Suratha) of the state of Kalinga, an independent feudal kingdom located on the east coast, in the present-day state of Odisha and north parts of Andhra Pradesh. The Kalinga War included one of the largest and bloodiest battles in Indian history. Kalinga did not have a king as it was culturally run without any.

This is the only major war Ashoka fought after his accession to the throne. In fact this war marks the close of empire building and military conquests of ancient India that began with Maurya king Bindusara. The bloodshed of this war is said to have prompted Ashoka to adopt Buddhism.

Imagination of being the Emperor Ashoka in the battlefield of Kalinga

Explanation:

  • As the mighty King Ashoka, the Kalinga War threw open my eyes. I was very happy with its victory over the Mauryas initially.
  • However, in the aftermath, it made my heart wrench in pain to see the battlefield covered with nothing but blood and dead bodies everywhere.
  • The war left more than 100,000 valiant soldiers dead and 150,000 imprisoned and a huge number of elephants and horses dead.
  • The pain the families of those dead soldiers were suffering was unbearable.
  • The entire city of Kalinga brought down to rubbles with no one to live there.
  • Any war leads to this colossal suffering which is not good for mankind. Giving up war and following peace and ahimsa is the only way to serve mankind.
