Shylock was a Jew who had unconditioned hatred for Antonio and thus he wanted to take revenge on Antonio for his daughter, Jessica eloping with Lorenzo, Antonio's friend and taking a lot of Shylock's money. To add to that, Shylock's servant, Launcelot Gobbo quit working for him, and was now working for Bassanio, Antonio's friend.

After all these setbacks, and each of them being related to his rival, Antonio, Shylock decided to exact revenge by demanding that he had one pound of flesh off of Antonio, which indirectly meant a death sentence.
