Dear diary,
After Shylock departs, the duke extends an invitation to supper to Portia, who is still posing as a young lawyer. Portia declines, stating that she needs to head to Padua right away. The duke instructs me to give the young legal clerk a reward because it was he who saved my life as she departs. Although he is blind to her disguise, Bassanio thanks Portia and provides her the money he brought with him to pay off Shylock. Portia declines the present, claiming that rescuing me from Shylock's grasp serves as full compensation. She eventually complies when Bassanio asks that she take a token from him.
Portia requests Bassanio's ring, which she herself gave to Bassanio on the condition that he never part with it, and my gloves. Bassanio withdraws his hand, referring to the ring as a toy, and declares that he would not disgrace the judge by presenting him with such a meagre gift. Bassanio instead promises to locate the most priceless ring in Venice, but Portia is adamant and insists on the trifling or nothing.
Portia asserts that Bassanio's explanation—that the ring was a gift from his wife who made him swear never to part with it—is convenient and used by many men to hang onto things they'd rather not lose. She then exits the scene. Bassanio is urged by me to give the legal clerk the ring, telling him that he should place a higher value on the man's worth and my affection than his wife's directives. In the end, Bassanio sends Gratiano to pursue Portia and give her the ring.
