As I was walking down the footpath, I witnessed an accident that stills haunts me in my dreams. A motorbike was knocked down by a speeding car on Kazi Nazrul Islam Avenue, popularly known as VI.P. Road. The first thing I did was to note down the registration number of the rogue vehicle. There were three boys on the bike, two pillion riders and the driver. I then requested a few young men in the crowd, that had gathered in a flash, to help me take the boys, who were writhing in pain and bleeding from injury, to the nearby Charnock Hospital. We called the cycle rickshaws and took them to the hospital, which thankfully is within 500 yards of the accident site. The policemen, who had come by then, made arrangements in towing the motorbike to the nearby police post and assured us of the safety of the badly damaged vehicle. We then reported to the emergency department of the hospital, assisted by a local police officer on duty.
