Class X board exam has served the dual purpose of a qualifying examination to decide a suitable stream of education and also a good benchmark to assess students’ level of learning and knowledge. As such, a good performance in the board exam has been a prime motivator for young students. This exam has a great role in ensuring discipline amongst the students and is a standardised yardstick for evaluating students in schools across the country.

Answer:

In Dec 2020, board exams were postponed due to inadequacies of online education so students could attend offline school and clear their concepts. However, even the extra months haven’t enabled students to prepare due to the following reasons:

1) In accordance with the COVID protocols, students could only attend school in groups in a staggered manner for two days a week when offline classes started in mid/late Jan, 2021. This has left them with a maximum of 22 days of offline school, most of which were dedicated to conducting offline pre-board examinations and practicing for the practicals. The students, have had barely 4-6 days to revise the theory portion concepts that carry 70% of the weightage, and most of their concepts are still unclear.

2) Most parents did not allow their children to attend school due to the rising COVID cases and economic struggles (they couldn’t drop their children off to school due to dire need to work and couldn’t pay for transport due to lack of money). These students are unclear with their theory AND practical concepts.

3) In accordance with the COVID protocols, a lot of schools were shut down when staff/teachers tested positive. Students of these schools have barely attended one week of offline schooling and cannot be expected to be clear with any of their concepts.

The boards are meant to be a standardised examination that tests all students on an equal platform. However, lack of proper internet connection and inability to afford more than one device in hundreds of families has left many students at a major disadvantage, negating the entire point of the board examinations. However, it is still important to conduct them considering how important they are for our college admissions. Additionally, it is not possible to conduct the boards online due to the internet connectivity issues faced by a vast majority of the students.

CBSE should allow the students to appear for board examinations of only three subjects. With one compulsory language exam and two examinations from the four subjects in the students’ particular stream, they can appear for examinations in the subjects they will be pursuing in college/ the future. For example, students who want to study computer engineering can appear for examinations in Computer Science and Physics, or Computer Science and Mathematics depending on what branch of Computer Engineering they want to do.

This will not only allow the board examinations to take place, but also allow students’ ample time to prepare for three subjects that they need instead of five, without compromising more with their education than the pandemic and online schooling has already done. Additionally, this will reduce crowding in the examination halls since the number of students appearing for each subject will reduce (except for the languages examination).
