i. Weak successors of Ashoka failed to cope with the administration.

ii. Mutual rivalries among the successors due to lack of laws of succession.

iii. The vastness of the empire was not within the control of Ashoka’s weak

and inefficient successors.

iv. The distance from the central capital (Pataliputra) encouraged the

provincial governors to behave independently.

v. King Brihadratha was the last king of the Mauryan dynasty. He was

killed by his army chief Pushyamitra Sunga
