Answer:

IMPORTANCE OF CAVITE MUTINY IN PHILIPPINE HISTORY

  • Cavite Mutiny (January 20, 1872), brief uprising by 200 Filipino soldiers and workers at the Cavite Arsenal that became the pretext for Spanish suppression of the embryonic Filipino nationalist movement.
  • Ironically, the Spanish authorities' harsh response ultimately served  to advance the nationalist cause. Many scholars believed that the Cavite Rebellion of 1872 was the beginning of Philippine nationalism that would eventually lead to the 1896 Philippine Revolution.
  • The forced exile of many Filipino liberals in Hong Kong, Japan, the Mariana Islands and elsewhere. The main cause of the mutiny is believed to be an order by Governor-General Rafael de Izquierdo to levy personal taxes on soldiers in the Engineering and Artillery Corps, from which they were previously exempted.
