• Cavite Mutiny (January 20, 1872), brief uprising by 200 Filipino soldiers and workers at the Cavite Arsenal that became the pretext for Spanish suppression of the embryonic Filipino nationalist movement.
• Ironically, the Spanish authorities' harsh response ultimately served  to advance the nationalist cause. Many scholars believed that the Cavite Rebellion of $1872$ was the beginning of Philippine nationalism that would eventually lead to the 1896 Philippine Revolution.
• The forced exile of many Filipino liberals in Hong Kong, Japan, the Mariana Islands and elsewhere. The main cause of the mutiny is believed to be an order by Governor-General Rafael de Izquierdo to levy personal taxes on soldiers in the Engineering and Artillery Corps, from which they were previously exempted.
