Friction forces between surfaces causes energy loss. The two types of Intermodal land transportation, rail and trucking will be examined in this lesson, along with the role that friction plays in transportation. Friction, which is worse in vacuum, has caused irreversible failures in many space instruments. This concept is useful in many instances. The friction force is independent of the area of the surfaces in contact and which is proportional to the applied load.

Friction is very important in our daily life. If there were mo friction in the roads the tyres of the car would move indefinitely and it will become impossible to stop the car. Also the car will slip of the road as it will not get the proper grip and we will not be able to control it. Without friction it will be even impossible to walk. All the other kinds of land transport would face the same problem.
