Explanation:

  • The “inland waterways” refer to as rivers, canals, creeks, backwaters, etc., to carry products and individuals from one location to another.
  • The main inland waterways in India is rivers, such as, Brahmaputra, Ganga, Yamuna, Godavari, Mahanadi, Krishna, Kaveri, Narmada, Tapi, etc.
  • With the increase the importance of roadways and railways, then decrease in river transportation.
  • After that, “the diversion of river water into canals which is mainly used for irrigation purpose rendered many of these waterways inappropriate for navigation.
  • India's inland waterways are almost 14,500 km long. Mechanized ships navigate about 3,700 km of this.
  • To enhance the importance and effectiveness of inland waterways, “Inland Waterways Authority of India” (IWAI) was established in 1986.
