Research in education is important in the 21st century as it can be used to shape the courses, either looking inwardly at the institution and how the current curricula is working, and outwardly through the examination of various aspects of the community and society, the needs of the workplace, awareness of advancements in other countries and to look at what is happening in education across the globe. This way the students will learn about what makes education what and how it is, and what are the worldwide commonalities of education.

Research in education helps look at an issue, or problem, explore extensively any literature about the issue and direct the researcher to design a relevant and purposeful focus to research. Sometimes research is used conjointly with evaluation, to improve a situation e.g. personal, managerial, and professional problems may be dealt with in this manner. This type of research is called ‘action research’.

Research also helps to develop new knowledge, and new insights about the world around us.
