Rutherford's gold foil experiment involved shooting alpha particles, which are basically just helium nuclei, at a sheet of gold foil. A lot of the particles went through normally, not repelled by the electron cloud as ions.. A very small portion of the beta particles were reflected at a very severe angle. It was theorized from this that an atom is for the most part a lot of empty space, where stuff can pass, but has places where a lot of mass is concentrated. This led to the idea of the nucleus
.
There are major observation to prove that the atom has a center using gold foil experiment......
1. some of the alpha particles are bounced back. (it means that alpha rays hit something hard on the gold atom)
2. few of them are pass through the goil foil (it means that there is a space on the gold atom
3. some of them are deflected (the alpha particles was repeled by protons)
