Answer:

The British could not gain control of southern India during 1765 because of Maratha kingdom present over these areas.

Explanation:

The British rule or East India Company rule in India officially started after a "Battle of Plassey in 1757", the British under Robert Clive defeated Nawab of Bengal Siraj Ud-Daulah and captured Fort Williams. After, "Battle of Buxar in 1764", Awadh also came under British.

But, in southwestern part of India Marathas were in height of their powers they had defeated the Nizam of Hyderabad and have captured most of the regions of India.

British knew that they cannot defeat the Marathas now so, they waited for them to decline so, that they could gain control of that area. These opportunities came after the third battle of Panipat in which Marathas lost against Ahmed Shah Abdali, most of a Marathas leaders were dead during this time and then after the first Anglo- Maratha war they were defeated and these areas ultimately came under British.
