In 1962, a young Jini Dinshaw founded the Bombay Chamber Orchestra. This year, it becomes the oldest and longest running orchestra in the country. In the 57 years since its inception, Jini has trained many young musicians who have gone on to play in the orchestra. The thunderous clapping of the audience has been a constant encouragement.
Though she faced a multitude of problems over the last six decades like a lack of funds, the politics of the Indian music fraternity, a heavy taxation on live performances, and the high maintenance cost of elaborate musical instruments, none were bigger than the problem of relevance. “Why does Mumbai (or India) need the Bombay Chamber Orchestra? Why do people always grumble about performing arts?” was a question she had to answer every time she took action to make the orchestra grow. But her passion for Western classical music was far greater than the discouragement she experienced. She organised and conducted concerts, gave free music lessons, and encouraged young musicians to continue pursuing and practising music.
