total obs. = n = 13-4 =9
observations on ascending order --
35, 36,38,40,41,50,57,61,71
median=
 { (\frac{n + 1}{2}) }^{the \: term} \\ \frac{9 + 1}{2} = {10}^{th \: term} = 41
41 is the ans

let the marks of students who failed be a,p,j,t.

arranging in ascending order:

a,p,j,t,35,36,38,40,41,50,57,61,71

now n=13

so median=(n+1)/2 th term

=14/2 th term

=7 th term

=38
