. Flexibility of a cell membrane helps in the selective movement of the substances across it. In  Amoeba, the flexibility of membrane helps in engulfing the food particles from the outside environment by a process called endocytosis.

2. Rigidity of cell wall helps in maintaining the structural integrity of the cell.

3. Semi permeability of cell membrane helps in only selective substances to move across the cell. Gases such as carbon dioxide and oxygen pass through diffusion, while other small molecules such as sugar pass through a process called passive transport. Ions such as sodium or potassium are transported through a process called active transport (with the utilization of ATP). Movement of water molecules through the membrane takes place by osmosis.
