SOLUTION
GIVEN
In a certain Algebra 2 class of 26 students, 16 of them play basketball and 9 of them play baseball. There are 5 students who play both sports.
TO DETERMINE
The probability that a student chosen randomly from the class plays basketball or baseball
EVALUATION
Here it is given that total number of students = 26
So total number of possible outcomes = 26
Let A be the event that a student play basketball and B be the event that a student play baseball
Then A ∪ B is the event that the a student plays basketball or baseball
Then
n(A) = 16 , n(B) = 9 , n( A ∩ B ) = 5
Now
n( A ∪ B )
= n(A) + n(B) - n( A ∩ B )
= 16 + 9 - 5
= 20
Hence the required probability
