In a circle , length of the chord PQ is 12 cm . Distance of PQ from the centre O is 8 cm . Find the diameter of the circle.

Answer::

A right angle triangle is formed at POR :

Length of PR = PQ/2 = 12/2 = 6 cm

From ΔPOR right-angled at R

Using Pythagoras theorem :

• PO² = PR² + OR²
• PO² = 6² + 8²
• PO² = 36 + 64
• PO² = 100
• PO = Under root 100
• PO = 10 cm

• PO = Radius = 10 cm = r
• Diameter = 2r = 2×10 = 20 cm
