Solution:

Total Students n(S) = 180

passed in chemistry n(C) = 110

Failed in chemistry = n(C') = 180 - 110 = 70

Failed in Mathematics = n(M')  = 120

passed in Mathematics n(M) = 180 - 120 = 60

failed in both the subjects. n(C' ∩ M')  = 30

Students in the class failed in at least one subject?

n(C' U M' ) =  n(C')  + n(M')  - n(C' ∩ M')

= 70 + 120 - 30

= 160

students failed in Chemistry only

n(C')  -  n(C' ∩ M')

= 70 - 30

= 40
