Let the number of girls be y

As per the first condition

Total no. of students in class = 42

x + y = 42 ...........(1)

As per the second condition.

x = 2y/5 ......(2)

from eq.(1)

x + y = 42

x + 5x/2 = 42

2x + 5x = 84

7x = 84

x = 12 ...(3)

Subs x = 12 in eq. 1

x+y =42

12+y=42

y = 42 -12

y=30

Boys = 12

girls = 30
