The number of women at first would be 42.

Step-by-step explanation:

Let the women's original count in the society be x

So,

Number of men in original = 3x

After 29 women and 16 men together became part of this society,

The number of women = x + 29

The number of men = 3x + 16

It is given that,

The new count of men is double the count of women. So,

(3x + 16) = 2(x + 29)

⇒ (3x + 16) = 2x + 58

⇒ (3x - 2x) = (58 - 16)

∵ x = 42

Thus, the women's count at first was 42.
