Total number of students = number of students failed + number of students passed.

X = X * 40% + 559

X = (X * 40)/100 + 559

X = (40X + 55900) / 100

100X = 40X + 55900

X ~ 931

So the total students are 931, so the number of failed students would be:

931-559 = 372

Hence... 372 students failed in the exam
