Let X be total number of Students. Then,
Total number of students = number of students failed + number of students passed.
X = X * 40% + 559
X = (X * 40)/100 + 559
X = (40X + 55900) / 100
100X = 40X + 55900
X ~ 931
So the total students are 931, so the number of failed students would be:
931-559 = 372
Hence... 372 students failed in the exam
