Let number of appearing students be x.    Then, number of passing students = 90% of x = 0.9x  Also, Number of failing students = x - 0.9x => 8800 = x - 0.9 x => 8800 = 0.1x => x = 88000  Hence, total number of appearing students = 88000, and number of passing students = 0.9*88000 = 79200.
