let the number of cows be x, and number of hens be y.

according to question

4x+2y=78..................(1)

x+y=35........................(2)

by solving these two equations we get

4x+2y=78

4(x+y=35)

it gives

4x+2y=78

4x+4y=140

by subtracting the above equation we get

-2y=-62

y=31.

put the value of y in eq. 2

x+y=35

x+31=35

x=35-31

x=4

hence we get the answer that we have 4 cows and 31 hens.
