Proximity is the most important force in starting friendships. It develops interpersonal attraction between friends. It helps in creating strong relations with friends by gathering in social events.
 
It depends upon sincerity and devotion of both friends whether they want closeness among them or not. It also develops closeness between people which ends up by personal liking and disliking.

So, it is a necessary force in my opinion.
