Answer:

Mass of ball 1 = m1 = 200 g

Mass of ball 2 = m2 = 200 g

Velocity of ball 1 = v1 = 2 m/s

Velocity of ball 2 = v2 = -2 m/s (Opposite in direction)

As after collision the balls stick together and move ahead further in the same way, this type of collision is said to be inelastic collision.

Formula : m1v1 + m2v2 = (m1+m2)v

Using the given information :

⇒ 200×2 + 200×-2 = (200+200)v

⇒ 400 + (-400) = 400v

⇒ 400-400 = 400v

⇒ 400v = 0

⇒ v = 0/400

⇒ v = 0 m/s

Hence, the velocity of combined balls after the collision = v = 0 i.e. Option C.

Extra Information:

  • Collision is when two objects of some mass come in contact with each other for some time.
  • The most common example of collision in our daily life is whole playing carrom. When the stricker comes in contact with any coins or one coin come in contact with other.
  • There are two types of collision : Elastic collision and Inelastic collision.
  • Elastic collision is when after collision, the total momentum and the total kinetic energy is reserved.
  • Inelastic collision is when after collision, the objects stick together and move together. Here, the energy is transformed into heat or light and the masses follow the law of conservation of momentum.
  • Formula for elastic collision : m1u1+m2u2 = m1v1+m2v2.
  • Formula for inelastic collision : m1u1+m2u2 = (m1+m2)v.

Given :-

In a game of snooker, two balls each of mass 200 g are moving in the same straight line but in the opposite directions with a velocity of 2 ms1

To Find :-

Velocity

Solution :-

We know that

m₁u₁ + m₂u₂ = m₁v₁ + m₂v₁

m₁u₁ + m₂u₂ = (m₁ + m₂)v₁

(200 × 2) + (200 × -2) = (200 + 200)v

400 + (-400) = 400v

400 - 400 = 400v

0 = 400v

0 = v[tex][/tex]
