A fossil is any preserved remains, impression, or trace off any once living thing from a past geological age. The branch of science which is involved in studying the fossils or remains (such as exoskeleton, bones, shells and DNA remains etc) is known as palaeontology. Palaeontologists use these remains to estimate their age, for molecular analysis and evolutionary history of life.
