In a lottery of 50 tickets numbered 1 to 50, one ticket is drawn. Find the probability that the drawn ticket bears a prime number.

SOLUTION :  

GIVEN: Lottery tickets are marked 1 to 50. One ticket is drawn at random.

Total number of lottery tickets = 50.

Number of all possible outcomes = 50

Let E = Event of getting a lottery ticket bearing a prime number

Lottery tickets marked prime number are 2,3,5,7,11,13,17,19,23,29,31,37,43,47,49

Number of outcomes favourable to E = 15

Probability (E) = Number of favourable outcomes / Total number of outcomes

P(E) = 15/50 = 3/10

Hence, the probability of getting a prime number on the Lottery ticket , P(E) = 3/10 .
