In a mathematics test given to 15 students, the following marks (out of 100) are recorded. 41, 39, 48, 52, 46, 62, 54, 40, 96, 52, 98, 40, 42, 52, 60 Find the mean, median and mode of this data.

Hello,

Solution:

1) Mean = sum of all observation/ Total number of observation

Total Students = 15

Value of observation= 41, 39, 48, 52, 46, 62, 54, 40, 96, 52, 98, 40, 42, 52, 60

Mean =
 \frac{41 + 39 + 48 +52 + 46 + 62 + 54 + 40 + 96 + 52 + 98 + 40 + 42 + 52 + 60}{15}  \\  \\  =  \frac{822}{15}  \\  \\  = 54.8

Median:

1) Arrange data in ascending order

39,40,40,41,42,46,48,52,52,52,54,60,62,96,98

2) Total numbers of observation= 15

Odd: (n+1)/2

=(15+1)/2 = 8 th element is median

Median = 52

Mode:

1) Arrange data in ascending order

39,40,40,41,42,46,48,52,52,52,54,60,62,96,98

2) Count the frequency of each observation,the observation having most frequency is the mode

So, 52 appears 3 time,maximum time

Mode = 52

Hope it helps you.

What is Mean?

The average of a given set of numbers is called the Arithmetic mean, or simply the mean, of the given numbers.

Mean = \frac{Sum \: of \: observations }{Number \: of \: observations }

_______________________

What is Median?

After arranging the given data in the ascending or descending order of magnitude, the value of the middle most observation, is called the median of the data.

Formula to find the median :)

Method : Arrange the data in increasing or decreasing order of magnitude. Let the total number of observation be n.

(i) If n is odd, then median

⇒ Value of \mathsf{( \frac{n + 1}{2} )\th} observation.

(ii) If n is even, then median

⇒ mean of \mathsf{( \frac{n}{2} )\th} and \mathsf{( \frac{n}{2} + 1 )\th} observations.

Mode : The most frequently occurring digits, is called mode of the data.
