Since Complimentary Angles always sum to 90°, any angle exceeding 90° would simply mean that the sum of the two angles is not 90° therefore they do not form pair of complementary angles.

For Example:

50° and 40° are a very valid complementary pair. since 50° + 40° = 90°

but, 100 and 20 are not, since 100 + 20 = 120 ( not = 90);

so, any pair can't have an angle exceeding 90°.
