In a paragraph discuss the importance of colour in the two scavengers in a truck ,two beautiful people in a mercedes
Answers
Answer:
A garbage truck and a “flash” Mercedes stop side by side at a red traffic light – 9a.m. in downtown San Francisco. This allows the poet to compare the two couples on board each vehicle and his language reveals his attitudes to them, to the American Dream and to America being a (supposed) “democracy”.
On the surface (ostensibly) the couple in the Mercedes represent the success of the American Dream and the garbage men show the uglier side of life. However, closer study of the poet’s language reveals that the poet may not really admire the rich couple and the garbage men may not be as ugly as they appear on the surface.
LANGUAGE/POETIC TECHNIQUES: At first, the garbage men appear ugly. They wear “plastic” blazers which connotes cheapness. They are described metaphorically like the most ugly of animals – “scavengers” (compare with the “Vultures” poem). They are “grungy” (dirty, smelly). The older of the two has “grey, iron hair” a metaphor which sounds dull and ugly. The older one is described as a “gargoyle Quasimodo” (simile) – a gargoyle is a deformed, ugly statue on the outside of a church. Quasimodo was the ugly hunchback of Notre Dame (in the novel of that name).
However, perhaps the poet really admires the garbage men who do a dirty, but useful, job in society – which is why they are “grungy”. “Iron” is plain and boring but it is also strong – like the older garbage man. A “gargoyle” is ugly but it does a good job in scaring off evil spirits – just like the garbage men keep us safe from disease. (In the original novel, the village people thought Quasimodo was evil because of his appearance (compare “Vultures”) – but he was a loving person – in love with the beautiful Esmerelda). So all these images are quite ambiguous.
In the same way, the “beautiful couple” appear to have it all – they drive a Mercedes – a car linked with wealth and glamour. They wear the latest fashions – “a hip suit” and a sexy “short skirt and coloured stockings”. They are on the way to “his architect’s office” – so either he has a high status job as an architect or else he is employing his own architect – either way he is wealthy.
However, the writer adopts an ironic tone when he refers to this rich couple who do little for society and spend their time “posing” in their expensive car and “flashy” clothes.
