Answer:

The number of 50 p coins = 180

Step-by-step explanation:

Given:

  • Number of 25 p coins = 2 times number of 50 p coins
  • Total money in the piggy bank = Rs. 180

To Find:

  • The number of 50 p coins

Solution:

We know that

50 p =0.5 rupees

25 p = 0.25 rupees

Let the number of 50 p coins be x.

Let the number of 25 p coins be y

By given

Number of 25 p coins = 2 times number of 50 p coins

Hence,

y = 2x-----(1)

Given that the total amount in it is Rs.180

Hence,

0.25 × y + 0.5 × x = 180

Substitute the value of x from equation 1

0.25 × 2x + 0.5 × x = 180

0.5 x + 0.5 x = 180

1x = 180

x = 180

Hence the number of 50 p coins is 180

Now to find the number of 25 p coins, substitute the value of x in equation 1

y = 2 × x

y = 2 × 180

y = 360 coins

Hence there are 360 25p coins.

Verification:

Total amount in the piggy bank = 180 rupees

0.25 × 360 + 0.5 × 180 = 180

90 + 90 = 180

180 = 180

Hence verified.
