let the total marks be 100x
so mean marks of boys = 40x
total marks of boys = 85*40x = 3400x
mean marks of girls = 60x
total marks of girls= 35*60x= 2100x
total marks of boys and girls= 3400x+2100x= 5500x
so means marks of all student= 5500x/(85+35)= 5500x/120= 275x/6
so the mean mark is 275/6= 45.8333

Answer:

mean marks for 85 boys = 40%

Sum of all the marks for the 86 boys = 40 x 85 = 3400%

mean marks for 35 girls = 60%

Sum of all the marks for the 35 girls = 60 x 35 = 2100%

Total number of students = 85 + 35 = 120 students

Total marks = 3400 + 2100 = 5500%

Average marks = 5500 ÷ 120 = 45.8%

Answer: The average percentage of the school is 45.8%
