Yes this is because Sodium is a quite very reactive metal. It is always stored under Kerosine to prevent its exposure to air or moisture. If by chance it comes in contact with air or moisture then it reacts explosively with it to release excess heat and starts burning. thus there is always a chance that it burns on exposure to air. so if held in hand it can cause burns and harm us but if held in spatula then its quite safe to work on it.
