Given,
The successive discounts are 20%,40% and 60%
To find,
The overall discount percentage.
Solution,
Let, the marked price = Rs. x
(Assume x as a variable to do the further mathematical calculations.)
Price after first discount = x - (x×20/100) = x-x/5 = Rs. 4x/5
Price after second discount = 4x/5 - (4x/5 × 40/100) = 4x/5 - 8x/25 = 20x-8x/25 = Rs. 12x/25
Price after third discount = 12x/25 - (12x/25 × 60/100) = 12x/25 - (12x/25 × 6/10) = 12x/25 - ( 12x/25 × 3/5) =
12x/25 - 36x/125 = 60x-36x/125 = Rs. 24x/125
Price difference = x - 24x/125 = 125x-24x/125 = Rs. 101x/125
Discount percentage = 100 × (101x/125 ÷ x)
= 100 × 101x/125 × 1/x
= 100×101/125
= 80.8%
Hence, the total discount is 80.8%
