Given : In a village assembly, 1000 people cast their vote out of which 10% were invalid. After discussion 1000 people again casted the votes out  of which 20% were invalid.

opposition increased by 20%,

now this is cancelled by majority which is 300% more than previous.

To find  :   how many people cast their votes in opposition

Solution:

Total Votes = 1000

Valid votes = 1000 - (10/100)1000 = 900

opposition  = x

in favour = 900 - x

Passed by majority = 900 - x - x = 900 - 2x

Valid votes = 1000 - (20/100)1000 = 800

opposition  = x + (20/100)x = 1.2x

in favour = 800 -1.2 x

cancelled  by majority = 1.2x - (800 -1.2 x ) = 2.4x - 800

300% more

900 - 2x  + (300/100) (900 - 2x)  = 2.4x - 800

=> (900 - 2x) 4 = 2.4x - 800

=> 900 - 2x = 0.6x - 200

=> 2.6x  = 1100

=> x ≈ 423

It should have been integral value , may be issue with data

if opposition increased by 50%

Valid votes = 1000 - (20/100)1000 = 800

opposition  = x + (50/100)x = 1.5x

in favour = 800 -1.6 x

cancelled  by majority = 1.5x - (800 -1.5 x ) = 3x - 800

(900 - 2x) 4 = 3x - 800

=> 2.75x = 1100

=> x = 400
