Void ratio is calculated as - e = Vv / Vs, where Vv is the total voids of the air and water in the soil and the Vs is the void of the soil only.


So, Vv = voids of air  + voids of water-filled in the soil.


Vv = 1/4V + 1/5V = 9/20V


Vs = V - Vv = 9/20V


e = Vv / Vs = (9/20V) / (9/20V) = 1


So, the void ratio of the soil which has 1/4th air and 1/5th water will be = 1.
