The number of students speak both tamil & malayalam = 19

Given :

In abhis class of 44 students , 28 students speak malayalam , 26 students speak tamil , 9 students speak none of the two languages

To find :

The number of students speak both tamil & malayalam

Solution :

Step 1 of 2 :

Write down the given dats

Let S = Total students in the class

A = Students who speak malayalam

B = Students who speak tamil

Then, n(S) = 44 , n(A) = 28 , n(B) = 26

The number of students speak none of the two languages

= n( A' ∩ B')

= 9

Step 2 of 2 :

Find number of students speak both tamil & malayalam

n( A' ∩ B') = 9

⇒ n [( A ∪ B)'] = 9

⇒ n(S) - n( A ∪ B) = 9

⇒ 44 - n( A ∪ B) = 9

⇒ n( A ∪ B) = 35

⇒ n(A) + n(B) - n( A ∩ B) = 35

⇒ 28 + 26 - n( A ∩ B) = 35

⇒ 54 - n( A ∩ B) = 35

⇒ n( A ∩ B) = 54 - 35

⇒ n( A ∩ B) = 19

The number of students speak both tamil & malayalam = 19
