in all the reactions only sodium chloride is used but why here molten sodium chloride is used and give sodium metal
Answers
Answer:
In all other reactions NaCl is not used, but a solution of NaCl(very commonly with water) is used so that Na And Cl might dissociate into ions in them and take part in the reaction.
NaCl can NOT be made to have ANY chemical reaction without it being dissociated into ions.
In this case we are doing electrolysis of water.
Electrolysis means dissociation of a compound by passing electricity through it. Now for electricity to flow either there must be free electrons or or ions. But here NaCl lacks both.So we heat it so that it reaches molten state where its ions are set free.Hence, electricity can flow via ions and allow the process of electrolysis to happen.
Hope This helps you
And By The way The question you asked was quite unique and required introspection. It reflected your highly analytical skills and ability to relate everything in essence.
I feel so happy that someone is really trying to understand science in its essence and really learning and not just memorising information. But allowing your mind to ponder over science. It was great dude.
Keep up this temperament of challenging all facts by logic and reason and only then accepting them and ,not to be forgotten, pondering and contemplating science and the reasons for scientific facts.
Glad to meet you dude.
