let the total no. of votes polled be = x
since the winner got 55% votes
therefore the losing candidate got = (100-55)% votes
                                                 = 45% votes
the no. of votes polled for the winner = (55/100)x
the no. of votes polled for the loser = (45/100)x
since the winner won by a margin of 8900 votes
therefore,
                (55/100)x  -  (45/100)x  =  8900
                             (10/100 )x      =  8900
                               x/10             =  8900
                 therefore,             x     =  8900  *  10
                                            x     =  89000
Ans )  Therefore the total number of votes polled = 89000
