In an election contest between X and Y, X obtained votes equal to twice the number of persons on the electoral roll who did not cast their votes, and this later number was equal to twice his majority over Y. If there were 18000 persons on the electoral roll, how many voted for Y?

Only a genius can solve this.

No:of voters who didn't caste their votes=4000
Total polled votes=14,000
X's votes=8000
Y's votes=6000
Majority of X=2000. No:of voters who didn't cast their votes= 2* X's majority...4000=2*2000
