A fuse has a low melting point so when the amount of current is increased suddenly by any cause the fuse wire gets hot and since the melting point is less it breaks thereby breaking the circuit and our appliance will remain unharmed.
Hope this helps u and good luck with the answer

This is due to the fact that if the amount of current exceeds the given value then it may easily break the circuit which may prevent damage to electrical appliances.
