No of boys=1100
no of girls=900.
50% of boys= 50/100 * 1100=550
40% of girls=40/100 * 900= 360.
therefore out of 2000 students (550+360) passed the exam
therefore out of 2000, 910 students passed.
now,
Percent of candidates failed= 2000-910/2000 *100
1090/2000 * 100
109/2
54.5%(Ans)

Given,

In an exam, the boys appeared = 1100

The girl appeared = 900

Boys qualified the exam = 50%

G qualified the exam = 40%

To find,

Percentage of candidates who failed in the exam

Solution,

The number of candidates who qualified for the exam is calculated by multiplying the qualifying percentage by the candidates

The number of boys who qualified for the exam = 50%×1100

The number of boys who qualified for the exam = 550

Similarly, the number of girl who qualified for the exam = 40%×900

The girl who qualified for the exam = 360

Now, the total number of candidates= 1100+900

= 200

The number of candidates who qualified for the exam = 550+360

= 910

The number of candidates who failed the exam = Total candidates - Candidates who qualified for the exam

The number of candidates who failed the exam = 2000-910

= 1090

The percentage of candidates who failed the exam = Number of candidates who failed the exam/Total candidates

The percentage of candidates who failed the exam =1090/2000

The percentage of candidates who failed the exam = 54.5%

Hence, the percentage of candidates who failed the exam is 54.5%
