In an examination 25% of the candidates failed in mathematics and 12% in english. if 10% of the candidates failed in both the subjects and 292 passed in both the subjects, the total number of candidates appeared in the examination was ?

Let the total no of candidates be X %of students failed only in Maths=25% - 10%=15% Failed only in English=12%- 10%=2% Failed in either of the subjects=15% +2%+10%=27%  According to the problem, (100%-27%) of X = 272 or, 73/100 * x = 272 or, x = 272*100/73 or, x = 400
