marks obtained by the student =302
fails by 18 marks
So, 40 percent of total marks =302+18=320
1 percent =320/40=8
100 percent / total marks=8*100=800marks

so, total marks=800

Since he failed by 18 marks, the pass mark is 302+18=320.

This 320 represents 40%, so divide 320 by 40% to get 100%, i.e

=320/40%

=320/0.4

=800.
Therefore, total marks is 800
