marks got by student = 302
student failed by = 18
marks for passing  = 302+18 = 320
let the total no of marks be x
marks percentage for passing = 40 % (given )
so  40% * x = 320
   x =800

verification (not needed but for better understanding )
40% * 800 = 320
40/100*800=320
hence proved
