Solution:-

Let the number given to the student be 'x'
So, according to the question.
3x/4 - 150 = 3x/14
3x/4 - 3x/14 = 150
Taking L.C.M. and solving it.
(21x - 6x)/28 = 150
15x = 150*28
x = (150*28)/15
x = 280
So, the number given to the student was 280.

Let the number be x

Given:

Student was asked to find (3/14)th of a certain number = 3/14 x

By mistake, Student found 3/4 of a number = 3/4 x

Answer he got =  150 + 3/14x

Therefore,

3/4 x = 150 + 3/14x

3/4x – 3/14x = 150

(3 * 14) x – (3 * 4) x = 150 * 4 * 14

42x – 12x = 8400

30x = 8400

x = 280

Answer – The number given to the student is 280.
