\sf\underline{Step-by-step \: explanation}

Given,

Percentage required to pass = 40 %

Marks the student got = 142

Marks he got more than passing marks = 22

Hence; the passing marks were,

142 - 22 = \mathrm{120}

If 40 % were 120 then 100 % would be,

Forming an equation,

 \sf\dfrac{40}{100}  \:  \times  \: x \:  =  \: 120

Solving the equation,

 \sf\dfrac{40}{100} x \:  =  \: 120

Using cross multiplication,

12000 = 40x

300 = x

Hence, the maximum marks of the exams were;

\huge\underline{300}

Given - Marks obtained

Find - Total marks

Solution - Total marks were 300

Let the total marks be x. So, the marks obtained were 22 more than minimum marks, as per the question. Representing this in mathematical form.

142 = 40%x + 22

Solving the equation to find the total marks.

Performing subtraction -

142 - 22 = 40% x

120 = 40x/100

Now, performing multiplication and division to find the total marks represented by x.

x = 120*100/40

x = 300

Thus, total marks were 300.
