Heya !!

Here is your answer : -

Given,

Passing percentage of a exam = 35% ©

A student gets 30% marks and fails by 20 ® marks.

To find,

Maximum marks i.e total marks of examination

Main solution :

Let total marks be x.

Framing linear equation for case © :

Passing marks = 35% of x = \frac{7x}{20} (€)

Framing linear equation for case ® :

Passing marks = 30% of x + 20 =
\frac{3x}{10} + 20. (¥)

Now , equating equations € and ¥, as both of them represent total marks :

=>
\frac{7x}{20} = \frac{3x}{10} + 20.

=> Now, solving for x.

=> \frac{7x}{20}- \frac{3x}{10} = 20

=> \frac{x}{20} = 20

=> x = 400 marks

=> Total marks = x = 400 marks.

Hope it helps you.
