Carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) is a non polar liquid and water is polar. Thus CCl4 is insoluble in water. Thus mixture of carbon tetrachloride and water can be separated by using separating funnel. These two immiscible liquids can be separated on the basis of density difference. The heavier liquid (CCl4 ) form the lower layer and the lighter one (water) forms the upper layer. By using a separating funnel, we can separate the two liquids. The lower layer of liquid is filtered through the funnel and the upper layer of liquid remains there.
