Yes, during welding our eyes need protection as when we weld anything , the metal and both which is needed on welding are so hot and they emits a lot of energy and Light ... So if we protect our eyes we could c that where and how much weld is required of and it also protects our eye from small metal pieces which could harm our w eye ball rather it can Blind us by piercing through our eyes.
